The promoter of this competition is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization The American Cultural Society of Seattle, hereinafter named ARCS.
The competition is open to Romanian-Americans between the ages of 14 and 21, who live in the Pacific Northwest. ARCS reserves the right to verify the eligibility of entrants.
HOW TO ENTER
To participate, entrants must upload up to three (3) photos that show places, persons, or moments that make them feel strongly about their American-Romanian cultural identity.
Entrants need to: 1) name each photo, 2) say where it was taken, 3) write a caption of up to 120 words that tells the story behind the photo and explains how the photo relates to the entrant’s Romanian-American identity/heritage.
ARCS accepts only one (1) entry per person. An entry is a submission of up to three (3) photos with caption. The photos must be taken by the participants (subject to verification).
IMAGE FILE REQUIREMENTS
- Resolution: at least 3000px for the longer side of the photo.
- File format: jpg (highest quality is recommended, mobile phone images are accepted)
- File Size: no more than 20 MB.
The submission form is open from June 24 to September 5, 2016, end of day (EOD), Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).
Entries received after the deadline will not be accepted.
After the competition’s closing date, ARCS will publish the qualifying photos from all eligible entries on its website.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize will consist of any of the following or a combination thereof:
- cash / gift cards
- photo editing software
- passes to the Seattle Romanian Film Festival, 2016
Honorable mentions will come with a small gift. Prizes are non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives.
JUDGING CRITERIA & CONDITIONS
The contest consists of two rounds of evaluation. In both rounds, a team of judges (Jury) with expertise in photography and Romanian-American cultural heritage will evaluate the entries and will select the top entries by applying the following criteria:
- How the submission as a whole (photograph & caption) conveys a story of cultural identity: "What does it mean to belong to both the Romanian and the American cultures?"
- Photographic quality
- The quality of each photo's caption
After the competition’s closing date, the Jury will shortlist for round 2 up to 12 finalists from all eligible entrants.
The finalists will have their qualifying photos exhibited at Bellevue Library, October 1-16, 2016.
In addition, ARCS may display the photos at various heritage-focused events and organizations in the PNW. Dates and locations TBA.
In order to be considered for a prize/honorable mention, finalists MUST confirm in advance and ATTEND the Awards Ceremony on October 1, 2016, at the Bellevue Library, Room 1, 4-5:30pm.
The finalists will be notified by email by Monday, September 12, 2016, EOD, PDT. Upon receiving the email notification, finalists MUST CONFIRM their attendance at the Awards Ceremony NO LATER than Monday, September 19, 2016, EOD, PDT. In the event of non-acceptance, supplementary finalists may be selected at ARCS’ discretion.
If applicable, waitlisted finalists will be notified by email, by September 19, 2016, EOD, PDT, about being in the running for the competition’s awards. Waitlisted finalists MUST CONFIRM their attendance at the Awards Ceremony by Saturday, September 24, 2016, EOD, PDT.
ARCS will handle the printing and framing costs for the exhibition(s) it organizes.
ARCS cannot finance travel and accommodation expenses for participants to the Awards Ceremony or any event where the finalists' photos will be exhibited.
COPYRIGHT & USE OF PHOTOGRAPHS
The photographer retains the copyright of the image.
By entering the competition, all entrants grant the promoter the right to use their entries on the project web site or in any other ways appropriate to the goals of the ARCS project. Furthermore, entrants agree to have their real names and photos published online as well as at the photo exhibition. The prize-winner accepts to be associated with publicity accompanying or resulting from this promotion.
By submitting an entry, participants declare that the author of the photo is the person indicated as such on the entry form. The promoter of this competition cannot be held responsible for the use of falsely or erroneously submitted entries.
All Finalists will be contacted by Email and asked to submit a release form signed by a parent or legal guardian agreeing to the terms described herein. If ARCS does not receive the signed parental release by email within three (3) business days of ARCS's email request, the finalist may be disqualified, and may not proceed to round two.
ARCS reserves the right to terminate or withdraw this contest at any time. ARCS assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, delayed, damaged, or misdirected entries, or for any failure of the website during the competition period, for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment software, failure of any email, or entry to be received by the promoter on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to an entrant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participating and entering in the promotion.
The promoter reserves the right to amend the specification of the prize or offer an alternative prize of equal or greater value. The promoter shall be entitled to terminate or modify the promotion or to modify these rules at any time prior to the closing date by publishing any such modification or termination on any website operated by the promoter. In the event of a dispute, the decision of the promoter shall be final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into. The promoter is not responsible for contacting or forwarding prizes to entrants who provide unclear or incomplete information or for entries lost, misdirected, delayed, or destroyed.
Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or undermine the legitimate operation of this promotion is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and should such an attempt be made, the promoter reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution.
Entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are illegible, mechanically MV reproduced, mutilated, forged, falsified, or plagiarized.
Events may occur that render the competition itself or the awarding of the prizes impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the promoter and accordingly the promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the promoter as a result thereof. The promoter has organized this competition in good faith and does not accept liability relating to the prize.
