The Romanian Film Festival Seattle + Control N
10 Romanian and Moldovan feature films will be screened in Seattle on November 1-3, during the 11th edition of the Romanian Film Festival Seattle.
The Cultural Association Control N is joining ARCS this year as co-organizer of the 11th edition of Romanian Film Festival Seattle, working as a bridge between Romanian filmmakers and the American public.
Launched in 2014 in order to promote Romanian film to diverse American audience, including the Romanian diaspora in Washington State, the festival has grown over the past 10 years, becoming one of the most important events of its kind on the west coast, a platform for facilitating access to the most recent internationally awarded Romanian films and for Romanian filmmakers, directors, actors and producers, attending the festival.
Among the titles presented in the past to Seattle audiences are the fiction films Metronom (directed by Alexandru Belc, 2022), Întregalde (directed by Radu Muntean, 2021), Unidentified (directed by Bogdan George Apetri, 2020), La Gomera (directed by Corneliu Porumboiu, 2019), Breaking News (directed by Iulia Rugină, 2017), Sieranevada (directed by Cristi Puiu, 2016), Why Me? (directed by Tudor Giurgiu, 2015), Aferim! (directed by Radu Jude, 2015), Closer to the Moon (directed by Nae Caranfil, 2014) and the documentaries Occasional Spies (directed by Oana Giurgiu, 2022), Colectiv (directed by Alexander Nanau, 2019), and Crulic (directed by Anca Damian, 2011), to mention only a few.
The American public has also had the opportunity to interact directly with the Romanian filmmakers invited to Seattle: actors Victoria Cociaș, Florin Piersic Jr., Horațiu Mălăele, Maia Morgenstern, Ioana Flora, Iulian Postelnicu; directors Radu Gabrea, Oliver Tătaru, Ramona Uricariu, Tudor Giurgiu, Oana Giurgiu, Paul Negoescu, Iulia Rugină, Mona Nicoară; cinematographer Ana Drăghici, screenwriter Florin Lăzărescu, and film critic Monica Filimon.
The Romanian Film Festival in Seattle will take place November 1-3 at SIFF Cinema Uptown, an important cultural setting and promoter of European film.
For the past three years, alongside the screenings organized in Seattle, the festival has also had editions during the same period in Detroit, MI and Phoenix, AZ with a number of films selected, and organized by two other sister organizations, ARCS Arizona and ARCS Detroit. The three festivals share the same brand and visual identity, created by Daniel Ursache, a Romanian artist settled in Montreal, Canada. This year’s festival theme is Rhythms of Life.
The festival lineup and guests of the 11th edition of the Romanian Film Festival Seattle will be announced in September.
The festival is organized with the support of 4Culture, the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, and the National Center for Cinematography in Moldova.
The cultural association Control N was founded in 2009 by screenwriters Oana Răsuceanu and Ana Agopian, and director Iulia Rugină in order to nurture filmmaking education in Romania and to create bridges between local and international artists, to support artistic debuts and creativity in performance arts. During its 15 years of activity, Control N has become one of the most energetic organizers of cultural events in film, theater, dance, photography, and creative writing. The classes, creative workshops, conferences and masterclasses organized (which have added up to about 1300 participants from various artistic fields), are complemented by international projects realized by partners in Italy, France, Belgium, Poland, and the United States.
This is the second collaboration between ARCS and Control N, after two successful editions of the ARCS Summer Camp in 2018 and 2019.
