SUMMARY:Global Competence Certificate for Heritage Language Speakers
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Migrant/Bilingual Department has awarded a first-ever Heritage Language Program Grant to Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver\, WA\, to develop a year-long remote-learning program for Heritage Language speakers of Romanian\, Russian\, and Spanish. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in stimulating your children’s creativity\, nourish their bicultural and bilingual heritage?   \nOur Romanian Heritage Language School offers innovative virtual classes and workshops for children\, youth and adults with Romanian background or with an interest to learn Romanian\, nationwide. Our teaching methods are based on the core principles of Heritage Language Education to nourish bilingualism and address holisitically the bi-cultural identity of our students through project-based activities\, play\, authentic sources\, critical thinking\, and meaningful interactions with their families and communities. Our students gain pride and confidence as heritage language speakers and learners of Romanian\, while developing a global understanding of the world. \nWe are the first Romanian secular community-based school to have developed a teaching curriculum according to the priciples of HERITAGE EDUCATION\, since 2016. \nOur current students come from numerous regions in the US. DESCRIPTION:We have added more dates to our series of cooking courses with Irina Georgescu! Her cook books Carpathia and Tava have received wide acclaim. Tava has been recently nominated for a James Beard Award! \nJoin us on more culinary adventures as Irina teaches us about Romanian dishes from around the country\, infused with cultural and historical references. \nJune 3\, 12-2pm PST – Romanian Mezze \nCovrigi – bread loops filled with ham: an iconic street food staple made with a very simple dough where the quantity of oil is key to how they turn out. Irina will explain the variations before you start preparing the recipe. \nFasole Bătută – garlicky white bean spread served with caramelised onions: a wonderful alternative to chickpea hummus\, light and packed full of flavour. \nCiușpais – Zucchini (Courgette) Dip \n  \n  \nJuly 2\, 12-2pm PST – Romanian Vegetarian Meal \nPlăcintă cu caise – Apricot Pie \nCiulama de ciuperci – mushrooms with garlicky sour cream white sauce \nCourses are $30 each. \nRegister and pay at the links below. She writes with integrity and respesct towards this rich heritage\, and constantly raises the profile of Romanian culinary identity\, bringing forward traditions and realities little known outside of her country. \nHer first book\, ‘Carpathia\, food from the heart of Romania’ was shortlisted by the UK Guild of Food Writers for the Best International Cookbook Award\, while its German translation was awarded a Silver Feather by the German Culinary Academy. The book was also translated into Hungarian and Dutch. Her second book\, ‘Tava\, Eastern European Baking and Desserts from Romania and Beyond’ is a meticulously researched baking book celebrating centuries of diversity and overlapping cultures that form today’s cuisine in Romania.
