SUMMARY:Dor by Mari Calai - Virtual Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:"Dor" it is being said\, is one of those untranslatable Romanian concepts. Roughly meaning “longing\,” Dor is the title of Mari Calai’s latest book. As Lynn Radeka noted\, “the book is a visual journey through images that evoke a sense of longing\,” in other words\, "Dor" is Mari’s visual attempt to illustrate this very Romanian concept. We invite you on Wednesday\, April 14 at 8 pm EST / 6 pm MST / 5 pm PST to the virtual launch of "Dor" and to a discussion with the author about what led her to write and illustrate this book with her amazing photography. The event is being organized by Romanians of DC with the support of Bucharest Inside the Beltway from Denver and ARCS – American Romanian Cultural Society from Seattle. The event will take place via Zoom and broadcast live on Facebook. To join the zoom event please register here. Mari CalaiMari Calai has been an artist for the past 10 years. Born and raised in Romania\, and for the later part of her life living abroad from Italy\, to the United States and South Korea\, she has been traveling the world exploring different cultures\, and that is what inspires her the most. She is an international award-winning photographer and an avid painter with her most recent exhibitions in Seoul\, South Korea and Washington\, DC. As a mixed media artist\, her work is sublime and marked by a nostalgic realism. Her previous book\, "Adagio\," an illustrated story of her children’s childhood\, was widely praised in Korea\, where it was published and was the subject of two photo exhibitions in Seoul.

Find out more about their pioneer spirit\, amazing careers and fascination for uncharted territories on Earth and out of space. \nLuminița Cuna founded Maloca Communities\, a grassroots support organization that supports indigenous communities in Brazil’s Amazon region to have greater control over the decisions that impact their communities. \nYou can support their activity by making a donation on their website. \n \nWatch Raul Paz Pastrana’s documentary OME\, co-produced by Luminița Cuna\, to find out more about the devastating impact of oil companies on the Amazonian forest. \n \nRegister HERE in advance for this meeting. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \nOrganized by ARCS in partnership with Romanians of DC. \nInstructors\nLuminita Cuna\nShe is a Cluj-Napoca native and Brooklyn resident who has been traveling extensively to the Amazon region and has been living and working with indigenous communities in the Amazon since 2006. She has been an ally to indigenous peoples for more than 15 years\, supporting their efforts to uphold their human rights and to protect their territory. \nLuminita is the founder of Maloca\, a grassroots support organization that works with indigenous communities living in the Amazon basin. She has been fundraising and campaigning on various indigenous issues\, helping indigenous communities get solar energy\, incorporate technology in their territory defense and become aware of their rights and how to use them in protecting their forest. \nLuminița wanted to bring awareness on the rich cultures of the Amazon indigenous peoples\, as well as to unveil the fascinating world of the rainforest; this is how her book “Barefoot in the Amazon” came to life. Luminița also co-produced the documentary Ome: Tales from a Vanishing Homeland\, winner of the 2017 Queens International Film Festival for best cinematography. The documentary brings forward the fight of an Amazonian community to protect their home\, one of the most biodiverse area in the world. \nWhen she is not trekking the Amazon\, Luminița is an IT project manager. \n\nIoana Cozmuta\nDr. Ioana Cozmuța is the founder and CEO of G-space Inc (https://www.zerogspace.com)\, a women-owned B-corporations and a reflection of Ioana’s passions: to discover and build opportunities for socio-economic benefit at the confluence of Space and Earth and to mentor and inspire the new generation towards a more prosperous future for humanity. Ioana holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Groningen\, the Netherlands and she is an alumnus of Caltech and Stanford University. During her career at NASA and in the industry spanning two decades\, Ioana has built a legacy on transforming the status quo\, opening new avenues for innovation\, collaboration\, space technology commercialization and public-private partnerships. The current fiber optics manufacturing in space has its origin in a paper published in 2017. SUMMARY:Global Competence Certificate for Heritage Language Speakers
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) Migrant/Bilingual Department has awarded a first-ever Heritage Language Program Grant to Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver\, WA\, to develop a year-long remote-learning program for Heritage Language speakers of Romanian\, Russian\, and Spanish.
