Scroll down to get yours! \nAbout the bookFerenike is a confessional\, autobiographical novel built on the idea that no choice is entirely subjective. There exists a demon of grand History — a force that\, for Eastern Europe\, has always been a subtle architect of both individual and collective decisions. In the essential reality\, every choice is orchestrated. \nHaving as a starting point a childhood event\, the novel gradually outlines experiences related to our present. Every insignificant deed has consequences\, generates other events and a new perspective of the past. This premise leads to a gripping and powerful story about the discreet role that any individual has in the metamorphoses of great history. \nAn autobiographical novel\, Ferenike is also an experiment researching confession\, from its mystical to histrionic or manipulative areas\, with the stated intention of reminding the world that\, beyond intention\, there’s always the force of the storyteller. \nPlease RSVP below to receive the zoom link. \nDoina RuștiDoina Ruști is „a writer of the first rank in today’s literature"\, in the words of Nicolae Breban \, and „a writer of great talent and intuition”\, as Norman Manea has described her\, distinguished by a powerful and vibrant style. Her novels and short stories have received major awards\, been translated into several languages\, and are studied in schools\, enjoying wide critical recognition. Her work is marked by the blending of the fantastic with stark social realism. Her landmark novel is The Ghost in the Mill (2008)\, a powerful fiction about Romanian communism\, included in the post-communist neo-Gothic both in J. A. Weinstock’s Routledge encyclopediaand in Studies in Gothic Fiction (Zittaw Press). Thematically complementary\, Ferenike (Humanitas\, 2025) is her most personal novel\, a political and autobiographical fiction about memory\, guilt\, and feminine resistance. Equally acclaimed is Lizoanca at Eleven (2009)\, a novel about child prostitution\, whose style was compared by Western critics to Camus’s The Plague (Il Libero)\, and which has been included in several European academic programs\, among them the Doctoral School of the University of Barcelona. The Phanariot Trilogy—The Phanariot Manuscript\, The Book of Perilous Dishes (Mâța Vinerii)\, and Homeric—has enjoyed wide popularity. These novels explore the 18th-century Balkan imagination in an original\, fabulatory mode that reinterprets history. Mircea Muthu devoted a chapter to her work in his volume Romanian Literary Balkanism. Among these\, The Book of Perilous Dishes is the most widely translated\, published in English in London (2022)\, recommended by EUFestival and featured by the Historical Novel Society.  Her distinctions include the Writers’ Union Prize (Bucharest Association\, 2007)\, the Romanian Writers’ Union Prize for Prose (2008)\, the Ion Creangă Prize of the Romanian Academy (2009)\, and the Hungarian Writers’ Prize (Budapest\, 2018) for Best Translated Book. SUMMARY:Romanian Heritage Awards - 10th Edition
DESCRIPTION:The Romanian Heritage Awards are an annual competition for high school students with Romanian heritage or an deep interest in Romanian culture. Applicants of non-Romanian descent may qualify\, as long as their work and experience relate to Romania or the Romanian community in the US.  The award recognizes exceptional contributions to the cohesion of the Romanian community and the preservation of its heritage\, language\, culture and traditions. The jury involved base their decision on the national and international impact of the volunteering activity described\,  leadership potential and tracked record\,  academic achievements\, as well as the candidate's future vision for the benefit of the Romanian community\, locally and beyond. Granted by FORA\, American Romanian Cultural Society\, Romanian United Foundation\, Romanians of DC\, Together to Help\, Românul\, RoAm Pro\, and Alianța. More information about the award ceremony in September will be provided soon. See the list of last year's winners here.  Recognition and Awards All eligible participants will receive the official recognition of the Romanian Embassy in the United States. In the past years the award has helped the recipients distinguish themselves in their admission process to top colleges and institutions\, such as Dartmouth College\, Wesleyan University\, Pitzer College\, UC Berkeley\, UCLA\, UC Davis\, UC Santa Barbara\, UC Irvine\, Whitman College\, Purdue University\, UW Honors\, Harvard\, Cornell University and many others.  Timeline June 15 - Applications Open August 25 - Applications Close September 26 -  The award ceremony will be held in Washington DC. More details to come shortly. Apply HEREEligibility:    Academic standing: Minimum unweighted High School GPA of 3.0 – or equivalent\, running average for the last school year. Community and Teamwork Impact: Both individuals and teams can participate in the competition. Participation in teams is encouraged. See details in the application form. ​​Age and residence: Students must be enrolled in an educational institution in the USA and entering 8th-12th grade as of September of the competition year. Other criteria: Applicants must have Romanian heritage or their project/experience must relate to the Romanian diaspora. There are no Romanian or US citizenship requirements.   There are no fees required\, this competition is entirely free to participate in\, except for travel\, accommodations\, and any participatory or entry tickets. Your donations are highly encouraged to sustain the awards. ​Eligibility for national participants The top 5 winners of the regional competitions advance to the national competition. Evaluation criteria The following criteria will be used in the evaluation process (not all criteria are required\, but they will strengthen your application):  1) Community work and leadership The number of volunteering hours and their visible outcome and results will be a strong factor in the evaluation. Where applicable and possible\, volunteering and community work in Romania (e.g. groundbreaking projects with children\, youth and seniors from underprivileged social backgrounds\, or religious and ethnic minorities) will receive the jury's highest consideration. Please highlight this aspect in your application.  Please provide a detailed description of your working experience\, highlighting the ways in which your activity and leadership initiatives impacted the targeted community\, strengthening its civic spirit and sense of unity. 2) Essay  Please submit a short motivational essay that will describe how your community work influenced your own personal growth and brought awarness to your bicultural and bilingual identity in the US. We strongly encourage applicants to model their essay from their college application essays\, following a similar structure and attention to detail. The essay shall have no less than 200 words and no more than 650 words. Optional Essay Submit an essay under 400 words on any of these following topics: 1.a challenge that has taught you to be resilient\, or 2. where do you see yourself in 10 years from now\, or 3. any topic of your choice. Like with the main essay\, we strongly encourage applicants to model the college application essays\, following a similar structure and attention to detail.  3) Recommendations from local community leaders Your essay and recommendations (up to 2) will play an important role in the evaluation process. DESCRIPTION:How does the summer light feel? Is it golden and nostalgic? Is it blindingly bright? Does it linger on sticky fingers after a melted ice cream? As you soak in the beauty\, energy and memories along the way this season\, let your photographs speak what words cannot. \nARCS is delighted to invite local and national photographers to participate in a group exhibition\, celebrating the joy of capturing sun-kissed moments! This is the first in our new series\, Through your Eyes. \nStart getting inspired\, but let photography be part of the journey\, not the destination. Come back in August and submit up to 3 images you feel are honest representations of the many layers of summer. \nWe will print the images for a group show at Gallery 4500 in Seattle and each one will be made available for purchase. DESCRIPTION:Join pianist Lucian Ban and violinist Mat Maneri for a special multimedia jazz concert on October 9 at the Good Shepherd Center. Drawing from their acclaimed new ECM Records release Transylvanian Dance and from NPR Album Of The Year Transylvanian Folk Songs featuring legendary woodwind player John Surman pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri reimagine through improvisation the Béla Bartók Field Recordings of folk songs from Transylvania using live performance along with video projections featuring rare archival footage\, audio from Bartók’s original wax cylinder recordings\, handwritten manuscripts and photographs taken by Bartók himself in his field trips. “It is such a joy for us to use varied folkloric approaches from around the world - all filtered through our love of improvisation and the jazz vernacular - to dig deeper into these folk songs and find the notes that bring out the heightened emotions of all folk music. All these are illustrating Bartok’s profound idea of a „connective tissue” that ties all folk musics around the globe\, a connection based on what he calls the „brotherhood of peoples”. Music always represents more than just the song itself. Folk music\, folk art is a container of a communal culture. And even a hundred years later\, long after the peasants sang into an Edison phonograph we partake in this culture\, in its beauty and mystery. Improvising in the moment also includes our personal history and experiences and through the audiences we play in front of\, it includes our collective history too.” - Lucian Ban & Mat Maneri\, 2025   TicketsTransylvanian Dance @ ECM Records On their second ECM duo album Romanian pianist Lucian Ban and US violist Mat Maneri find fresh inspiration as they follow the trail of Béla Bartók\, revisiting the folk music that spurred the imagination of the great Hungarian composer who\, in the early 20th century\, collected and transcribed numerous pieces from Transylvania. For the duo these songs have become “springboards and sources of melodic material” for arrangements “that capture the spirit of the original yet allow us to improvise and bring our own world to them. If you go deeper into the source material\, new vistas open up. These folk songs teach us many things.” (Steve Lake\, album liner notes). Developing the music from the Transylvanian folk transcriptions has become a priority in recent years\, with both players finding new freedoms in the material. On the present album\, Mat Maneri\, taking heed of Bartók’s observations about the “connective tissue” linking the musics of the world\, subtly draws influence from Arabian\, West African and Korean music as well as from the richly divergent folk sources of Transylvania in his uniquely liquid viola playing. Recorded live in October 2022 in the context of the Retracing Bartók project in Timișoara\, these performances also bear testimony to the finely attuned understanding that Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri have achieved in their long-running musical partnership. About Lucian Ban & Mat Maneri More than a decade since they started working together as a duo\, Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri are renowned for their amalgamations of Transylvanian folk with improvisation\, their mining of 20th Century European classical music with jazz\, and for their pursuit of a modern chamber jazz ideal. The two musicians first worked together in 2009 in the Enesco Re-Imagined octet that was conceived as a celebration and a contemporary jazz re-imagination of the works of the great Romanian composer George Enescu. Featuring an A list of jazz musicians – Ralph Alessi\, Tony Malaby\, John Hebert\, Gerald Cleaver\, Mat Maneri\, Albrecht Maurer and Indian tabla legend Badal Roy – the album was recorded live at the 2009 Enescu International Festival in Bucharest and won multiple BEST ALBUM of the YEAR Awards from Jazz Journalists Association and worldwide press coverage\, followed by concerts in major venues and festivals. JAZZ TIMES said “Enesco Re-Imagined is visionary third-stream music . . . this recording places Ban and Hébert among the great 21st-century interpreters.” The Guardian hails the album’s “rare combination of uninhibited but coherent solo and collective improv\, shrewd arrangement and dazzling thematic writing”. In 2013 ECM Records releases Maneri & Ban duo album Transylvanian Concert that was widely acclaimed for “its original voice and unorthodox beauty “(The Guardian) and spanned worldwide touring. It was followed by a trio with European avant-garde icon Evan Parker (Sounding Tears\, 2018)\, by Mr. Maneri’s own microtonal quartet Dust (2019\, a ROLLINGSTONE Best of the Year) and ASH (Wall Street Journal feature) and in 2020 by their radical recasting of the Transylvanian folk songs from the Bela Bartok Field Recordings with legendary reed player John Surman. By year’s end Transylvanian Folk Songs ends up on NPR 2020 Jazz Critics Poll \, on Balkan World Music Charts\, New York City Jazz Record BEST OF 2020 and more. In 2023 Ban and Maneri released on Sunnyside Records Oedipe Redux their radical take on George Enescu’s Oedipe opera featuring a cast of international celebrated contemporary jazz & improvisers – Jen Shyu\, Theo Bleckmann\, Tom Rainey and renowned French bass clarinet player Louis Sclavis. In 2024 Sunnyside Records released Blutopia\, a co-lead quintet by baritone saxophonist Alex Harding and Lucian Ban and featuring Mat Maneri\, Brandon Lewis and tuba master Bob Stewart. The duo first appearance on ECM was in 2013 when Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri joined up for a concert in an opera house in Târgu Mureș in the middle of Romania’s Transylvania region\, and recorded Transylvanian Concert\, an album featuring a program of self-penned ballads\, blues\, hymns and abstract improvisations\, the whole informed by the twin traditions of jazz and European chamber music. The music was\, as Jazz Times puts it\, “as close as it gets to Goth jazz” and won critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic\, including several Best Album of the Year awards\, and spawning continuous touring ever since. Transylvanian Concert @ ECM Records Their previous investigation of the Béla Bartók field recordings with legendary British reedman JOHN SURMAN produced the acclaimed Transylvanian Folk Songs album and was\, as JAZZ TIMES put it “as much an act of tribute as it is a transformation”. The album quickly to Billboard charts\, European Jazz Media Charts\, Balkan World Music Charts\, New York City Jazz Record BEST of 2020 and was named an NPR 2020 Jazz Critics Poll album. Rave reviews followed - the WIRE describes it as “Lush and romantic\, with each note placed as carefully as a stone”\, Deutchlandfunk Radio called the album “A magical event”\, and the Financial Times talks how “Village dances with a fresh spin -jazz\, folk and classical influences merge into a singular jazz voice”\, and NPR describes the “mystery in that bare-bones music and in much else on the album”. Discussing with Berlin Jazz Festival their investigation of folk music of Romanian people Mat Maneri talks about the “spirituality of these peasants that speak through music and how he loves this the most” while Lucian Ban underlines how “observing the traditions of folk music can teach us so much about improvisation and ultimately about music and life”. SUMMARY:An Evening at Queen Marie's Salon Concert
DESCRIPTION:Queen Marie (1875–1938) was one of the most devoted patrons of the arts and an accomplished artist in her own right—painter\, writer\, and musician. Although her love for music is well known and extensively documented in her diaries\, memoirs\, and correspondence\, the fact that she was a skilled violinist and singer is less widely recognized. As much as she enjoyed making music\, she took even greater pleasure in listening to George Enescu’s recitals; whenever he performed in Romania\, she welcomed him as a guest of the Royal Family at both Peleș Castle and Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest. A close friend of the celebrated violinist and composer George Enescu and his wife\, Queen Marie was deeply familiar with the violin repertoire\, which included works by Fritz Kreisler\, Johannes Brahms\, Edvard Grieg\, and Jules Massenet. Above all\, she cherished Enescu’s virtuosic compositions inspired by Romanian folk tunes\, dances\, and old melodies. This recital presents several of Queen Marie’s favorite pieces\, featuring three iconic works of Romanian classical music: Ciprian Porumbescu’s Balada\, Grigoraș Dinicu’s Hora Marțișorului\, and George Enescu’s Sonata No. 3 “in Romanian Folk Character\,” as inscribed by the composer. Affectionately nicknamed “Pinx” by the Queen\, Enescu impressed her with the sound of his violin\, the “extraordinary beauty of his art\,” as she wrote in her diary on November 25\, 1928\, and with the magic that awakened “the music of our souls”—a dedication she inscribed on the photograph she offered him in gratitude. “An Evening at Queen Marie’s Salon Concert” will evoke the atmosphere of an exquisite early‑20th‑century music salon within the modern\, elegant Auditorium of the Seattle Public Library\, featuring violinist Kevin Matheson and pianist Tim Fuller. Kevin MathesonViolinist Kevin Matheson\, was awarded first prize in the Charleston International Music Competition\, is a winner of Sound Espressivo’s ColOrchestra Auditions and performed as soloist with Orchestra Manhattan\, at Carnegie Weil Recital Hall. Kevin is a regular soloist with the Tahoe Philharmonic Orchestra and has recorded with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra\, in the Czech Republic\, for the Cicerone Music and Arts label. Kevin and his brother\, as a violin-viola duo\, received critical acclaim at their Carnegie Weill Recital Hall début as part of the Ibla Grand Prize competition winners’ tour. Their two successful tours to Japan included recorded performances at Yamaha Hall in Tokyo. Kevin is concertmaster of the Orchestra of Virginia’s Blue Ridge\, an Adjunct Instructor at Hollins University in Roanoke\, Virginia and is on the roster of Price Attractions artist management. Tim FullerGrowing up in Beirut\, Lebanon\, Tim Fuller was exposed at an early age to Arabic\, Turkish and Balkan music. At twelve he presented a full-length piano recital at Amman's Goethe Institute.
