DESCRIPTION:Join us for the latest installment in our literary series exploring short stories from the anthology Lucruri mărunte. Copilăria în comunism (Small things. The childhood during communism).  \nWe look forward to a virtual discussion with  author Cristina Hermeziu about her short story "The Meteorite". A link to the text (in Romanian) will be provided after registering below for the event. Please \nWe invite children in the Romanian diaspora who are interested in learning more about what a typical childhood looked like in communist Romania. Proficiency in Romanian is not required\, however the discussion is likely to be bilingual. We will accommodate questions in English as needed. All are welcome! \nThis 2023 FILIT editorial project was compiled by the National Museum of Romanian Literature in Iași and it brought together 22 Romanian authors to share a story about one of the objects on display at the Museum of the Childhood during Communism. \nPlease register below and join us for a thoughtful conversation about the recent past and the joy of reading.Participants will receive a zoom link after registration\, \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n    \n        Cristina Hermeziu is a writer and journalist. She was born in Iași in 1971 and has lived in France since 2005. She has published the novel Nickel (Cartier\, 2024); the poetry collections Parisul nu crede în lacrimi (Paris Doesn’t Believe in Tears\, Junimea\, 2016)\, which received the First Book Award at the Tudor Arghezi International Festival; Între timp îți vezi de viața ta (In the Meantime\, You Go On with... \n        Cristina Hermeziu is a writer and journalist. She was born in Iași in 1971 and has lived in France since 2005. She has published the novel Nickel (Cartier\, 2024); the poetry collections Parisul nu crede în lacrimi (Paris Doesn’t Believe in Tears\, Junimea\, 2016)\, which received the First Book Award at the Tudor Arghezi International Festival; Între timp îți vezi de viața ta (In the Meantime\, You Go On with Your Life\, Junimea\, 2020); and Elegii postHumane (PostHuman Elegies\, Junimea\, 2024)\, a bilingual Romanian–Spanish edition. She is also the author of the nonfiction/publicistic volume Vedere din Turnul Eiffel (View from the Eiffel Tower\, 2017). Her short fiction appears in the anthologies Cartea copilăriilor (The Book of Childhoods\, Polirom\, 2016)\, Lucruri mărunte (Small Things\, Editura Muzeelor Literare Iași\, 2023)\, and Garderoba (The Wardrobe\, Paralela 45\, 2024). She also coordinated the collective volume Viața pe Facebook. Dau like\, deci exist (Life on Facebook: I Like\, Therefore I Am\, Polirom\, 2020). In 2018\, she created Zoom France Roumanie\, an online cultural magazine that promotes Romanian literature translated into French. She is a founding member of the Cosmose cultural association in Paris and writes literary reviews for ActuaLitté and Revue des Deux Mondes. Since each text is accompanied by a recording and a dossier of activities\, students will have the opportunity to further practice writing and speaking in Romanian while trying to offer explanations to the mysteries they have read about. For this class\, students will keep a vocabulary journal and will write their own short texts or blog entries. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis class is designed for students who took the Romanian History I class and want to continue learning about Romanian history. Part II is dedicated to the twentieth century events: Great Union\, WWI\, WWII\, communism\, and post-communism. Continuing the exploration of modern and contemporary cultural identity\, students will expand their vocabulary\, as well as their reading\, listening\, and writing skills. Conceived as a two-quarter class\, we will focus on Romanian monarchs Carol I\, Ferdinand\, Carol II\, and Mihai. We will also examine the contribution of Romanian Queens – Elizabeth and Marie – to Romanian arts and civic life. The students will be engaged in attractive projects that will help them discover their roots and how they grandparents and parents survived the challenges of history.  \nIntermediate knowledge of Romanian is required. SUMMARY:Be ready for the Global Seal of Biliteracy\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Unique in the US\, the program “Be ready for the Global Seal of Biliteracy” helps students nationwide to earn high school credits for their heritage language (Romanian) by taking the ALTA Exam and to pass the STAMP test for English\, necessary for receiving the Certificate of Global Seal of Biliteracy. Juniors and Seniors in High School who scored highly in an English AP class or have passed the English part of ACT or SAT do not need to take the STAMP test. Nonetheless\, they need to provide the results so that an ARCS representative submits them alongside their ALTA test results to the Global Seal in order to request their certificates that will increase their chances of getting into highly-ranked universities in the US. Students can add their Global Seal to their Common App when they apply to universities. In order to receive this national honor\, we will work on improving Romanian writing and conversation skills by combining reading comprehension and grammar with interactive communicative methods. Groups of 4-5 students / 90 min\, weekly. This class is offered to students whose level of Romanian is intermediate high. \nThis is Part 1 of 2 quarters. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe $700 fee for both classes includes:\n– $132 representing the fee for the ALTA exam\n– $40 representing the fee for the STAMP test\n– $75 representing the Global Seal of Biliteracy processing fees\n– 30 hours of preparation for acquiring the Global Seal of Biliteracy\n– 15 hours of feedback on the written exercises \n\nScheduling\nTime: To Be Determined – We will work with parents and students to find the best times and days that work for you. Continuing the exploration of cultural identity and heritage through history\, students will enlarge their vocabulary and expand their reading\, listening\, and writing skills. Conceived as a three-quarter class\, we will go over crucial events starting with the Roman-Dacian wars\, the formation of the Romanian provinces\, and pursuing iconic leaders from Mircea the Elder\, Vlad the Impaler\, and Stephan to Alexandru Ioan Cuza and Carol I. The students will be engaged in attractive projects that will help them discover who their ancestors were and how they earned their place in European history. Novice to Intermediate knowledge of Romanian is required. Groups of 4-5 students / 60 min\, weekly sessions This is the first of three quarters for Romanian History Part: I. DESCRIPTION:Overview\nIn this course\, students will read intriguing texts on the world’s inexplicable mysteries such as pyramids\, ghost apparitions\, huge marine monsters\, heroes with superpowers\, UFOs\, and many others. Since each text is accompanied by a recording and a dossier of activities\, students will have the opportunity to further practice writing and speaking in Romanian while trying to offer explanations to the mysteries they have read about. For this class\, students will keep a vocabulary journal and will write their own short texts or blog entries.
