Our Romanian Heritage Language School offers innovative virtual classes and workshops for children, youth and adults with Romanian background or with an interest to learn Romanian, nationwide. Our teaching methods are based on the core principles of Heritage Language Education to nourish bilingualism and address holisitically the bi-cultural identity of our students through project-based activities, play, authentic sources, critical thinking, and meaningful interactions with their families and communities. Our students gain pride and confidence as heritage language speakers and learners of Romanian, while developing a global understanding of the world.

We are the first Romanian secular community-based school to have developed a teaching curriculum according to the priciples of HERITAGE EDUCATION, since 2016.

Our current students come from numerous regions in the US. We can accommodate to various time zones and have demonstrated experience teaching multiple levels and age groups.

This class is designed for non-heritage speakers 18+ who want to learn standard Romanian, the kind that you will most likely hear in the streets, read in the newspapers, listen to on radio and TV. The course addresses all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and (a little bit of) writing, by exposing participants to the authentic vocabulary of everyday life. Readings and short videos are included in almost all lessons, giving participants additional opportunity to utilize targeted vocabulary and grammar in online conversations.

As participants’ vocabulary expands and they become more confident Romanian users, the course will add topics of interest such as: Romanian cuisine, iconic places in Romania, and traditions.

Classes for adults are organized into semesters, consisting of 15 hours of instruction per semester. 

Using the Common European Framework of Reference for Language skills, the course is structured so that students reach the A1 level of competence after 30 hours of instruction (two semesters).

Level A1 Comprehension:
I understand current words and phrases relating to my person, my family and my living environment immediately when spoken to me slowly and clearly.

The course is designed for adult learners (17 and up) who possess a good understanding of Romanian and can communicate at an intermediate/advanced degree of fluency and spontaneity.

Objectives:
This course will focus on communicating about Romanian culture and society. You will familiarize yourself with current Romanian issues and you will learn to examine and discuss contemporary content with authentic documents such as press articles, film excerpts or YouTube videos.

 The course will be conducted mostly in Romanian and you are expected to participate in Romanian. Group discussion is encouraged. 

Language Accuracy:
While general comprehension and speaking are our main goals, we may review major grammar points as observed being used in context and put them into practice.

Preparation:
Some vocabulary preparatory work may be required between classes.
The course will be divided into chapters, each unit focusing on one authentic source.

Romanian History: Part I, (3 quarters): This class is designed for students who want to learn about Romanian history, including major personalities who steered the destiny of Romanians and their neighbors. Continuing the exploration of cultural identity and heritage through history, students will enlarge their vocabulary and expand their reading, listening, and writing skills. Conceived as a three-quarter class, we will go over crucial events starting with the Roman-Dacian wars, the formation of the Romanian provinces, and pursuing iconic leaders from Mircea the Elder, Vlad the Impaler, and Stephan to Alexandru Ioan Cuza and Carol I. The students will be engaged in attractive projects that will help them discover who their ancestors were and how they earned their place in European history.

Novice to Intermediate knowledge of Romanian is required. Groups of 4-5 students / 60 min, weekly sessions

In this course, students will read intriguing texts on the world’s inexplicable mysteries such as pyramids, ghost apparitions, huge marine monsters, heroes with superpowers, UFOs, and many others. Since each text is accompanied by a recording and a dossier of activities, students will have the opportunity to further practice writing and speaking in Romanian while trying to offer explanations to the mysteries they have read about. For this class, students will keep a vocabulary journal and will write their own short texts or blog entries. Whenever possible, we will meet specialists in world history and science to interview them and work on more formal conversation skills. Groups of 4-5 students / 60 min, weekly.
